This is an awesome little lens. It’s superbly sharp from center to edge. It has moderate barrel distortion that can easily be corrected with PTlens. The bokeh is nice but that’s very subjective. F1.8 is a real lifesaver in low light. Recently I’ve done a lot of interior available light shooting with my D300s at ISO 1600 to 3200 using this lens at F1.8 to F2.8. It’s amazing. Add a little noise ninja and your good to go.

Good:

Sharpness

Fast glass

Price

Bad:

Plastic

Auto focus sounds like asthmatic weasel

Occasionally non-correctable CA

In my opinion all the Good outweighs the Bad.

Excellent DX format camera. Having just switch from Canon I am duly impressed. The construction is solid. All the important controls have buttons. There is no need to go digging around in the menus. High ISO performance is very pleasing. ISO 1600 looks like film grain. ISO 3200 with noise ninja is very usable. The 51 point autofocus is really spot on. Multi-shot bracketing is awesome.

A couple gripes I have about the camera are as follows. I wish you could bracket up to 2ev stops per bracket. I also wish you could bracket with mirror up in continuous drive mode. I am also a little disappointed at the D300s’s 14 bit RAW high speed performance. Even the EOS 450D had a faster 14 bit RAW drive speed.

Still I think the good dramatically out weights the bad and really like the D300s. I’m glad I made the switch and am looking forward to getting my paws on a Nikkor 14-24mm in the near future.
